Damballah #45 Small Snake
Named after the Voodoo god of creation, Damballah, these candle holders are the reason I began making pottery; my creation story. Wandering the cobblestone streets of a beautiful colonial town in Brazil I happened to see into a window. Through a lacy curtain and a tangle of bougainvillea I saw a dining room table with a set of large shapely candle holders. Exactly how they looked and what they were I will never know, but the overall impression stuck with me. For years I held that image in my mind; I knew from the moment I saw them that I wanted to make something tall, shapely, each unique but all working together. Each year I try to make a set of them and each year they have a different style and look.
This set is wheel thrown and hand built in a earthy brown clay and finished with a white gloss glaze. The bases are carved with dots and the tops flow with abstract additions and handles.
This listing is for one Damballah with Snaking Arches. About 19” high
